FAQs

Are there any side effects of taking testosterone?

When performed correctly, testosterone replacement therapy has few side effects, and they occur in only a small number of patients. Nevertheless, you should consider the risks before undergoing testosterone replacement.

Side effects include:
  • Decreased Testicle Size
  • Reduced Sperm Count
  • Enlarged Breast Size
  • Liver Toxicity
  • Fluid Retention
  • Acne
  • Increased Red Blood Cell Count

Will taking testosterone increase my risk of prostate cancer?

Until recently, it was thought that raising your testosterone levels increased your risk of prostate cancer. But new research have overturned this belief. In fact, some evidence suggests that testosterone acts an an inhibitor against prostate cancer.

On the other hand, if cancer is already present in your prostate, testosterone could cause the cancer to grow faster. In-Balance Health will carefully evaluate your risk of cancer before recommending testosterone replacement therapy.

Is testosterone replacement the same as taking steroids?

No. While some steroids do contain testosterone (or chemicals that act like it), the steroids athletes use illegally are taken in much higher doses than we prescribe. What's more, steroids are often "stacked" with other substances to boost their muscle-building effect. The testosterone we use is molecularly identical to the testosterone your body produces naturally, and contains no added substances.

Will taking testosterone increase my risk of a heart attack?

Current findings are mixed and researchers are still investigating the link between testosterone and heart attacks. What we do know, is that having low testosterone is linked to poor cardiovascular health.

According to one study:

"In men, endogenous testosterone levels are inversely related to mortality due to cardiovascular disease and all causes. Low testosterone may be a predictive marker for those at high risk of cardiovascular disease."

Khaw KT, Dowsett M, Folkerd E, Bingham S, et al. Endogenous testosterone and mortality due to all causes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer in men. European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer (EPIC) prospective population study. Circulation. 2007;116:2694-2701.

In-Balance Health takes your cardiovascular health, including any history of heart attacks, into consideration before recommending testosterone replacement therapy. Before undergoing testosterone replacement, carefully consider the risks and benefits.
